Handling: Under depressionen i USA försörjer sig Chaney på att delta i illegala boxningsmatcher. Han når framgång när han får hjälp av promotorn Speed. Speed har dock ett spelberoende och hamnar i knipa, något som en konkurrent inte är sen med att utnyttja...

Omdöme: Denna Charles Bronson-rulle har jag velat se ett tag då den efter hans fyra stora (Once Upon a Time in the West, The Great Escape, The Dirty Dozen och The Magnificent Seven) tillhör de mer uppskattade. Han spelar Chaney som är en tystlåten medelåldersman som gillar att ta till knytnävarna mot betalning. Efter att han visat upp sig i en match ser promotorn Speed (James Coburn) sin chans att tjäna en hacka. Men då Speed har ett spelberoende tar det inte lång tid innan han sätter sig själv och Chaney i en svår sits. Då en konkurrent väldigt gärna vill vara med och tjäna lite pengar på Chaney måste de två fatta ett svårt beslut.



Filmen är relativt välproducerad, men depressionen blir ofta lite tråkig på film (vilket den tiden nog också var). Men man har iaf samlat tre duktiga skådisar i form av Bronson, Coburn samt Strother Martin (som spelar konkurrerande promotorn Poe) som får hålla upp filmen tillsammans med några svettiga matcher. Själva slagen ser man många gånger att de bara är luftslag, men då det känns som en amerikansk variant på de asiatiska martial arts-filmerna, utan att vara överdrivet, blir det ändå till belåtenhet. Det är nog ljudeffekterna som gör mycket, plus att Chaney är en cool karaktär. Lite kuriosa att regissören Walter Hill var missnöjd med Jill Irelands prestation (inte så konstigt) och tog upp detta med Charles Bronson (som på den tiden var gift med henne). Bronson uppskattade inte detta och vägrade göra fler filmer med Walter Hill som gärna hade velat jobba med Bronson igen.

Handling: Två barndomsvänner från södra Boston ger sig in på brottets bana för att ta sig fram i livet - ett val som får svåra konsekvenser för dem.

Omdöme: Jag trodde på förhand att detta var ännu en polisfilm om inte helt ärliga poliser. Jag brukar gilla den sortens filmer, så jag hade inget emot att se ytterligare en. Men istället för polisfilm så är det en film om andra sidan lagen då man får följa två barndomsvänner som faller in i den brottsliga banan. De jobbar åt en man som ger dem olika uppdrag, men efter femton år känner de sig fortfarande som springpojkar åt bossen. När han så hamnar i fängelse tar de chansen att jobba åt sig själva. Det innebär större vinst, men även större risker.



Talangfulle Mark Ruffalo spelar Brian som har två söner med sin vackra hustru Stacy (Amanda Peet). Hon är relativt ovetande om var han får pengarna ifrån, även om hon inte frågar så mycket så länge allt är lugnt. Men Brian börjar ta droger och dricker allt mer, något som påverkar hans privatliv allt mer. Samtidigt är hans vän Paulie (Ethan Hawke) en ganska hetlevrad person som vill åt de stora pengarna. Det är bara en tidsfråga innan de hamnar i fängelse, frågan är bara vilken väg de tar när de får en andra chans.



Filmen baseras på verkliga händelser från regissören och manusförfattaren Brian Goodmans liv. Att det är hans regidebut märks en del då filmen har lite problem med tempot, olika scenval och det stundtals hackiga berättandet. Filmens skådespelarinsatser, främst av Mark Ruffalo, är bra samtidigt som musiken påminner om den stämningsfulla huvudmelodin i Blood Simple. Tycker man kunde utnyttjat denna musik bättre även om den fick allt mer utrymme, men scenerna borde varit starkare när chansen fanns där.

Unexpected beauty

Just days ago, I was given the opportunity to see Arizona’s desert up close for the first time in years. Many people imagine the desert as a harsh environment, with rocks and sand (check!), spiny cacti (check!), strong sun (check, but just after vernal equinox, so it was very pleasant), and venomous insects and reptiles drooling for tender human flesh (none this time). Artist conceptions of heaven should depict it from other perspectives than tall conifers, ferns, and grassy meadows!

For those who look for beauty, beauty abounds. In the desert, tiny purple flowers and blue lupine, yellow brittlebush daisies, jewel-toned petals of the hedgehog cactus, gold-blooming palo verde trees, and long-stemmed scarlet ocotillos compete for space with sage-green saguaro cactus, which are budding for a creamy-white flowering in June. Brushing the tiny creosote leaves reminds one of the sweet scent of rain on the thirsty desert. A seasonal creek trickles through a tiny canyon of concreted multicolored gravel, 12 feet beneath the trail. A flower grows among sharp stones. The sky is brilliant blue with a white half-moon rising over the violet mountains to the east, and a breeze carries a floral scent. In the distance, a waterway gleams silver. Unexpected beauty.

In Egypt, ten massive, deadly disasters have struck all civilization from the animals and servants to the rulers. But on a clear night with a gigantic full moon and millions of stars, the numberless descendants of Abraham walked away from years of misery and marched triumphantly into the trackless desert – with relief and joy that they’d been passed over by death. In the Promised Land centuries later, Israel, again trapped by foreign domination and slavery, saw the Messiah slain as their Passover Lamb, and experienced His resurrection that conquered death and set the prisoners free. Unexpected beauty.

A woman hears an ambulance siren in the distance, but instead of going on with what she is doing, she stops and asks the Lord to bless the victims of illness or accident who require the emergency service. A group of recently-divorced people, instead of repeating their misery and intense pain to each other, volunteer at a kitchen for the homeless and find fellowship, fulfillment, and unexpected joy by selflessly serving the addicted, mentally ill, and indigent who live on the streets.

Unexpected beauty. A strong arm steadies the weak and embraces the lonely. A friend stays by your side in a crowd of strangers. A handshake is denied – because a hug is offered instead! Speaking words of support and comfort in the face of deception or disloyalty. Practicing humility and vulnerability so others can experience God’s power and Presence working through them to bless and encourage. Words of friendship and appreciation in an email. A shared treat brought home from the party. Passing along a compliment. Each of these actions is a blessing and an unforgettably gracious gift to the receiver.

Unexpected beauty. We don’t see it often enough, which is why it’s unexpected! But it has its rewards, both now and in eternity. A compliment or encouraging hug has an immediate payback when you see eyes light up or a bent back straighten. And when your target is recharged with that electricity, he or she now has the wherewithal to repeat the action to others in unending ripples.

“Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” Hebrews 10:24 NIV. A spur is a projection that goads or impels to action, speed, or achievement. Imagine “sticking out your neck” to be the change in someone’s life today. Imagine inspiring one person to complete a task with distinction because he or she has been encouraged to add that extra jolt of adrenaline or the finishing touch.

To overcome the negativity of criticism and judgment, psychologists estimate that it takes as many as 15 compliments or “atta-boy/atta-girl” encouragements to overcome the hurt and frustration. How efficient or “green” would it be to never state the criticism in the first place, but instead to uplift, empower, and “spur one another on toward love and good deeds”?

Yes, we know that God is love, and that He gave every molecule of heaven’s resources to reconcile with us and bring us home. But we forget so easily and must be reminded so often because we don’t truly believe it ourselves. We don’t own it. The fact is, we cannot be told or shown often enough that we are loved! We don’t hear often enough: “I love you.” (Full stop. No “buts.”)

“God's Son, eyes pouring fire-blaze, standing on feet of furnace-fired bronze, says this: ’I see everything you're doing for me. Impressive! The love and the faith, the service and persistence. Yes, very impressive! You get better at it every day.’” Revelation 2:18-19 MSG.

I need that. You need that. And because Christ lives in us, we can BE that to the people around us. We can BE the unexpected beauty in someone’s day of frustration or overwork. It’s no more labor on our part!

“A mean person gets paid back in meanness, a gracious person in grace.” Proverbs 14:14 MSG. And think of this proverb in terms of relationship, not material goods: “It's criminal to ignore a neighbor in need, but compassion for the poor—what a blessing!” Proverbs 14:21 MSG.

No matter your appearance or reputation, your community or church standing: you can BE the unexpected beauty in someone’s day. Let this be your challenge: go and shock someone by a compliment or encouraging word. Don’t qualify or explain it. Just do a hit and run! That one act will lift both of you and will resonate in many unseen lives. Who doesn’t want to be as beautiful and contrasty as a magenta cactus flower that matures into sweet, nourishing fruit? This world needs a lot less prickles and a lot more blooms!

Keeping the Illusion Alive...

Ever heard this term?  "Keeping the Illusion Alive"  I cant remember where I heard it.  Well I used to live by this  when it came to domestic cleanliness.  This means you run around the house and clean really fast before company comes over to keep the illusion of a clean house alive.  Last night I was wishing for a real magician.  I spent a few hours on the computer avoiding the" Aftermath"...

The after math of After Dinner and After School

I never did care for math.  Well I've decided recently (about 7 months ago) It would no longer be an illusion.  I would be my own company every morning so I can wake up to this.

Cleanliness of sorts, don't get too close, I'm still trying to keep the illusion alive. :-)

Temptation Stomped!

Sometimes I am tempted to publicly blog about my kids.  I read all these great stories about kids on other blogs, and how fun it is to read the experiences, It makes me wanna say "Look how cool my kids are too!" But alas, I'm a bit paranoid.  Just when I'm thinking I'm over reacting and should stop being ridiculous, something happens.  Well this time its happened in our community.  So I'm okay with keeping the kids under lock and key.  I've been so sick in the stomach about this, as have many others in the community.  And yes my family has had direct contact with this scum, but not in this manner thank goodness.  But the victims have been on my son's teams and my husband, (who once said "somethings not right with this guy!") has coached under his supervision.  So the temptation to share my kiddos with the world has once again been stomped out.  You just never know.

The story that has rocked our community!

Handling: Baserat på verkliga händelser utspelar sig denna psykologiska thriller i 1930-talets Tyskland. Den unge och ambitiöse advokaten Justus Wehner får sitt första stora fall - att försvara den brutala seriemördaren Peter Kürten. Wehner är övertygad om att Kürten lider av en svår mental sjukdom, och för att bevisa det gräver han djupt i mördarens förflutna, motivation och psyke.

Omdöme: Seriemördaren Peter Kürten och hans mord lär ha varit inspirationskälla åt Fritz Lang och hans M. Detta var något jag inte visste när jag såg filmen Normal som behandlar fallet ur advokatens ögon som intervjuvar honom. Justus Wehner är en orutinerad advokat som får detta tunga fall och som inte riktigt klarar av att handskas med det. Han kommer under den närmsta tiden försöka förklara vad som drivit denna hänsynslösa mördare samtidigt som han måste bekämpa sina inre demoner.



Peter Kürten spelas av Milan Knazko som påminner om en viss Anthony Hopkins (som "Hannibal") medan Justus Wehner spelas av Pavel Gajdos som i sin tur påminner om Adrien Brody. Då kan man lätt föreställa sig spelet mellan de två och det är stundtals intressant, men ger inte så mycket i längden. Överhuvudtaget känns filmens manus inte särskilt originellt eller av något större intresse. Man har trots allt en bra story att berätta, men då tycker jag definitivt man hellre bör se Manhunter, När lammen tystnar eller Antikörper för att se något klart bättre på samma tema.



Något som dock imponerar är filmens foto som inte bara har en snygg, kall och mörk look, utan även genomtänkta vinklar. Det är kanske som så att man koncentrerat sig för mycket på ytan och glömt bort att det faktiskt också ska betyda något. Som det blir nu är det för tomt för att ytan ska betyda något, men man blev gång på gång överraskad av de cinematografiskt skickligt genomtänkta lösningarna. Musiken liksom skådespeleriet gjorde sitt, men lyckades inte höja filmen trots att fotot alltså gjorde ett tappert försök.
