On Any Given Day: The Ugly File

After listening to Obama speak tonight about intervention in the humanitarian crisis in Libya, i pondered how there is a humanitarian crisis for women across time, geography, economics. What makes a crisis important enough to intervene?

A Wichita rape victim is outraged that her attacker was paroled, allowing him to pose as a police officer and sexually assault another woman in kansas City, Kan. 55 year-old Wesley Watson raped Lisa Clancy Nolla in 1980 when she was 14 years old. Now Watson faces an April Sentencing after he pleaded guilty to several charges in the December attack."  more from previous victim HERE   excerpt: Nolla wrote in a 2004 letter to the Kansas Parole Board that although Watson appeared to have no major behavior problems in prison, "when you look at his behavior while in the community it is a different story. This man seeks out, follows and attacks his prey." "He only does well in prison because there are no children or young women to violate, but the minute he is released he is out on the prowl again," she wrote. "I am here today to save the future victim of Wesley Watson.


...40 year-old woman found dead on her porch...

Jurors get grisly case...Four persons, including two brothers ages 10 and 7, were killed ...in a scene that looked like the scene of a slaughter..The youngest brother had been stabbed 131 times...

Tell me why this pattern of violence and disregard against women will end...?

Sadness. Can everyone agree that we cannot simply keep counseling, treating, and burying? That's like bailing water without any thought of plugging the hole...

Years of unprintable sexual torture broadcast:

Battering, Beheading, Rape, Murder, Trafficking, Abuse.

When i started this blog, i thought i would keep up with all the cases of sexual assault, at least.

I knew i could not track all the violence. But I quickly became aware of the weight of such an undertaking. Even limiting myself to the local area, i would have had to stay up late reporting them all.

And my head would start to become to heavy. It is not good for us to know all the bad things that happen, i think.

we are not meant to have it all.

But

i think it important to realize how many families have what seems to be unbearable pain as they work through the grief of trauma;

the worst kind is inflicted by others of our own species,

by our own extended family and friends.

The Ugly File: Any Given Day

Why we do what we do: Because on any given day, there are reports like these below in the paper. And for all those who have argued with me about the number of false reports, the majority of these are indisputable. The facts are out on the table, there are witnesses or unconscious people with injuries.

1. Police Interrupt Sexual Assault: "Vernon A. Gause, 44, of Blue Springs, was accused Monday of sexually assaulting a woman who has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old. Police say they interrupted the assault early Sunday. ...The 20-year-old victim told police she was waiting for a bus downtown..." (May 2010 KC Star)

2. "Police arrested a 32-year-old man at gunpoint Sunday morning after he allegedly raped a woman at a KC residence. Prosecutors charged Lee E. Manning of KC with forcible rape. A witness told police she walked in on the assault in the 400 block of highland Avenue and hit the rapist with a can of spinach, according to police reports.Officers found the (woman) in a fetal position and whispering "don't...no more...stop." She then started thrashing violently and baning her head on the wall, officers reported. The witness told police she saw the suspect choking the woman with both hands and sexually assaulting her.
