Handling: Ripley hittas efter 50 år i rymden av ett bärgningsskepp. Väl tillbaka på Jorden får hon höra att ett antal kolonisatörsfamiljer numera lever på planeten där hon tidigare stött på "aliens". Man har emellertid tappat kontakten med kolonisatörerna, och skickar därför Ripley och en grupp marinsoldater för att eventuellt rädda överlevande men också för att förinta "aliens".
Omdöme: Fortsättningen på rymdäventyret tar vid där den första slutade egentligen. Ripley hittas ute i rymden och väcks sakta upp. Hon har ständiga mardrömmar och svårt för att släppa vad hon varit med om. Hon har även svårt att övertyga sina överordnade om vad som hänt och blir degraderad. Men när man tappar kontakten med kolonisatörerna på planeten där Ripley var, erbjuds hon att följa med som observatör och konsult. Hon skickas tillsammans med ett gäng välutrustade, men inte så smarta, marinsoldater tränade för just sådana uppdrag.
Man märker tidigt att filmen har en större budget, fler skådespelare och att man lagt ner mer tid på att visa upp effekter. Men tidigt märker man också att rymdeffekterna, när rymdfarkosten svävar fram i rymden, inte är av högsta klass. Detta var något man aldrig märkte av i originalet, men här är det typiska 80-tals effekter som till stora delar är bra, men även visar sina brister. Däremot är varelserna riktigt skickligt utförda och fungerar ypperligt filmen igenom, stora som små.
Det är nu en större besättning man har att följa och jag tycker inte det blir samma fina stämning då. Å andra sidan är det bra att man inte upprepar sig utan försöker göra något lite annorlunda. Nu blir det mer ett actionäventyr med mycket mer pang på och det är lite mer människan som är jägaren - fast som vi vet inte i slutändan. Filmens stora miss är att ha med ett barn, flickan Newt, som iofs sköter sig väl under omständigheterna (hennes enda filmroll). Problemet är att hon inte hade behövts och gör att man då och då sänker tempot.
Filmens stora behållning är annars Bill Paxton i rollen som Hudson. Jag kan förstå att vissa kan störa sig på honom, men jag tycker han tillför något som fungerar väldigt bra och det är humor. Han är kaxig samtidigt som han klagar och blir allt mer rädd för varelserna. Hans negativa kommentarer är klockrena och får mig att skratta vid ett antal tillfällen. Han blir nästan hysterisk emellanåt, men på ett charmigt sätt. Lance Henriksen är skön som Bishop och har ett stelt skådespeleri som passar utmärkt för karaktären. Däremot är jag inte så förtjust i den manliga kvinnan Vasquez som ska vara coolingen i gänget.
Michael Biehn har en ganska nedtonad roll som gruppens riktiga ledare Hicks och passar bra. Tillsammans med Ripley är han hjärnan som tänker till lite innan de kastar sig in i något. Paul Reiser, som jag inte riktigt gillar, fungerar trots allt som sliskig talesman för "företaget". Ett bra och välfungerande actionäventyr, men den håller definitivt inte samma klass som originalet. Musiken är en annan sak som inte fungerar lika bra då den försöker vara för dominant och inte tillför rätt stämning. Å andra sidan får man ta det för vad det är, en testosteronladdad actionfilm som försöker gå steget längre än originalet.

Handling: Skräcken börjar när besättningen på rymdskeppet Nostromo undersöker en nödsignal från en avlägsen planet, och gör den fasansfulla upptäckten att där finns en livsform som uppstår och förökar sig inuti människokroppar. Nu måste besättningen inte bara slåss för sin egen överlevnad, utan även för hela mänsklighetens.
Omdöme: Besättningen ombord rymdfarkosten Nostromo består av sju personer, fem män och två kvinnor, som under ett uppdrag i rymden snappar upp något som liknar en nödsignal från en av planeterna. Vid sådana situationer är de tvungna att undersöka varifrån signalen kommer. De tar sig till planeten där de upptäcker utomjordiska varelser som inte verkar vara särskilt gästvänliga.
Det är inte för inte som detta klassas som en av de stora i filmhistorien. När jag tidigare sett den för länge sen har jag känt att den kanske är lite långsam och seg till en början. Men nu när jag ser den så tycker jag den är perfekt från allra första början. Det är oerhört mystiskt och stämningsfullt med ett lagom tempo, mycket tystnad i form av lagom mycket musik och istället bara ljuden från vinden eller farkosten.
Det är också bra att besättningen består av intelligenta människor som är där för att utföra ett forskningsuppdrag vilket bara gör att deras kamp mot varelserna blir intressantare. Att man sedan valt att dra ut på spänningen och inte låta en se varelserna så mycket är ett genidrag, speciellt med tanke på att varelserna blir så mycket mer skrämmande när man inte får se dem så mycket. Man vet bara att de är närvarande och kan slå till när som helst.
Jag tycker också man valt en utmärkt skara skådespelare och fungerande karaktärer. Det är endast sju personer i filmen och det räcker gott och väl. Den enda karaktären/skådespelerskan jag tycker är onödig är Lambert spelad av Veronica Cartwright. Det känns som hon inte har någon vidare betydelse och klagar mest hela tiden utan att tillföra något. Favoriten är annars Yaphet Kotto i rollen som Parker som är en av två maskinister ombord (den andra är Harry Dean Stanton som Brett).
Tom Skerritt fungerar som besättningensansvarig och under första halvan av filmen är det ganska jämn fördelning bland rollerna innan Sigourney Weaver som Ripley tar över och blir huvudperson. John Hurt och Ian Holm rundar av med två bra prestationer i en film fylld med atmosfär. Man har lyckats bra med rymdsekvenserna där "less is more" och man vetat sin gräns. Däremot är kanske själva varelserna lite svaga på sina håll, men eftersom de visas så sparsamt är det inget som stör. För övrigt måste jag berömma detaljrikedomen och funktionsdugligheten på allt, riktigt imponerande.

excerpt: "NASA is remembering three major tragedies in its history this week, starting with the 25th anniversary of the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger on Friday.
"This year marks the 25th anniversary of the loss of the Challenger—a tragedy that caused us to completely rethink our systems and processes as we worked to make the shuttle safer," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in an AFP report.
Along with deputy administrator Lori Garver, Bolden honored the lives of those lost in Apollo 1 and space shuttles Challenger and Columbia by laying a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia Thursday morning.
"The nation will never forget Jan. 28, 1986, nor its indelible images," Bolden added.
Challenger's entire crew was killed when the shuttle exploded just 73 seconds after its launch, 46,000 feet in the air. The explosion was broadcast on live television.
In 2003, a faulty heat shield caused Columbia to disintegrate as it re-entered the earth's atmosphere, killing seven astronauts. A fire aboard Apollo 1 proved fatal for the vessel's crew of three in 1967. This mission was the first of NASA's manned trips to the moon.
Since 1964, 24 people have been killed in a NASA mission, but NASA says it has learned since then.
"Safety is the number one priority at NASA and the shuttle launch schedule does not drive discussions or decisions when issues arise," a NASA spokesperson told PCMag. "That is reiterated often and is apparent in media events about the issues."
Perhaps the most telling example is the recent delays in the coming launch of Space Shuttle Discovery. The ship was originally set to take off on its final voyage on Nov. 1, but due to leaks, inclement weather, electrical issues, and equipment problems, the mission was delayed more than a half a dozen times. It's now scheduled to lift off Feb. 24.
"NASA has learned hard lessons from each of our tragedies, and they are lessons that we will continue to keep at the forefront of our work as we continuously strive for a culture of safety that will help us avoid our past mistakes and heed warnings while corrective measures are possible," Bolden said.
After Discovery, the shuttle Endeavor is supposed to launch in April 18, the AFP said. Additionally, if Congress hands over the necessary funds, NASA is hoping to send Space Shuttle Atlantis into orbit for an additional trip.
In October, President Obama signed the 2010 NASA Authorization Act, which added an additional flight to the space shuttle fleet before its retirement The administration is looking at a June launch for Atlantis, but it's lacking several hundred million dollars necessary to get the ship off the ground. "
New CID Cosmetics Palette Review & Topshop Jewellery
I am a big fan of palettes that have multiple products in them so I can chuck them in my case when I'm heading off on holiday. On my recent trip to Cork, I took the New CID Cosmetics Eyes, Lips & Cheeks palette with me and I just wanted to do a quick post on my thoughts. It contains 3 shimmering eyeshadows and one matte, 3 lipglosses and a blush. It has a mirror in the lid, a double ended applicator and it's priced at £24.00.
I was looking for the most compact palette I had to create day time looks and this one more than fit the bill. The three shimmering eyeshadows in ivory, light taupe, dark taupe and matte mid-brown create a very natural, softly defined eye for daytime. I just brushed the lightest shade all over the lid, defined the socket-line and outer edges with the mid shade, then used the darkest brown to add more depth and tidy up my brown eyeliner. The ivory shade makes an awesome highlighter for the inner corners of the eyes too.
The matte brown (used lightly) makes a great brow powder too so there was no need to take anything extra with me in regards to that!
The eyeshadows have fantastic pigmentation and create a really pretty sheen on the eyes without looking glittery - perfect for daytime wear. They went on smoothly, blended extremely well and lasted all day when applied over a good base (I used Mac Paint Pot in Soft Ocre). The matte shade takes a bit more work but from experience, they always do because they do not have as much dimension to them as the shimmery shades.
Here's some swatches of the eyeshadows to give a better idea of how they look once applied...
At first I thought the lipglosses might be a little bit bright but they apply very sheer and leave a really nice juicy, strawberry pink on the lips. The first two shades below are ever so slightly shimmery, whilst the third along has no shimmer whatsoever so you can choose which finish you like best. I also experimented with mizing the blush with the lipglosses. This gave them a slightly peachier tone and looked great too.
The blush in this palette is just plain gorgeous for Spring/Summer! It's a vibrant peachy pink that brings life to your face. You only need to dab your blush brush in this VERY gently to pick up enough product. It made my face look really fresh! I was very impressed because sometimes blushes in these types of palettes can lack quality or have chunks of glitter in them but this once applies smoothly, blends beautifully and lasts all day.
So in conclusion, this palette is well worth investing in if you travel alot or like to keep your makeup in your bag to re-apply during the day. All the products in it are high quality and super wearable, it really does save you from lugging around loads of different products too. It's lightweight but it feels well made and sturdy, compact and I love the white and hot pink packaging. Thumbs up on this one!
When I was in Cork shopping with Maddie, I popped into Topshop to check out their Spring collections and I couldn't help but be distracted by all the lovely jewellery! They have so many gorgeous pieces for Spring/Summer! I didn't pick anything up at the time because all these stores are more expensive in Ireland in comparison to Scotland so I wanted to wait till I got home. I had never paid much attention to Topshop's jewellery in the past but seeing all those lovely things has made me think again!
The first piece on my hit list is this amazing turquoise pendant...
I am truly obsessed with turquoise jewellery in summer! There's something about that colour against fresh white clothes and a tan that just looks amazing.. I love the delicate gold effect chain detail on this necklace and the way it falls over the stone. It WILL be mine!
Now I don't even have my ears pierced...but these make me want to get them done! How pretty would these be on holiday! I love the pale pink colour of the beads and they would look amazing against any colour of hair! Maybe I should go get my ears pierced now?! Or maybe that would just make me want to buy a truckload of earrings...
I always crave silver jewellery in winter and as soon as Spring/Summer rears it's head, I gravitate more towards gold shades. I think the above bracelets are so lovely and I really like the battered look to them, together with the delicate charms. So pretty!
And now for the song that boosted me to do an extra 5 mins on the cross trainer at the gym this morning. It's a feel good tune and I like the sentiment being the lyrics too.
