I happened to turn over the tv yesterday and catch the end of a Rita Hayworth film, Gilda (1946). I'm always totally mesmerised by how glamourous the women were in the 40's and 50's and I've often thought I would be better suited to that period what with my love of pencil skirts, stiletto platforms and other ladylike clothes. The other thing I love about this ear is the make-up. It was so glamourous but there was a real natural feel to it. In the pic on the left, I would say Rita Hayworth has strong brows and siren red lips but her eyes are kept toned down with a pale shadow and false eyelashes...so sexy in such a subtle way! I love the hairstyles too, the wavy bouncy look in this pic is just gorgeous. I mean she is unbelievably beautiful and feminine. Although we have attractive, glamourous celebrities now and they often emulate the old hollywood glamour look, I can't help thinking that nothing can quite match up to the originals like Marilyn Munro, Sophia Loren, Veronica Lake and Ava Gardner. Now THOSE were icons! They have influenced fashion and make-up right up to the present day. I would have loved to have lived back then and experienced that time when the silver screen was an escape to romance and pure unadulterated glamour.
